STATE REQUIRED ASSESSMENTS

The West Virginia General Summative Assessment (WVGSA) for students in grades 3-8 is an online summative test given toward the end of the school year to measure student performance on the state’s content standards, which provide clear, consistent guidelines for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level.

Students in grades 3-8 are assessed in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics. Students in grades 5 and 8 also are assessed in science.

The SAT School Day is the state’s general summative assessment for high school. It is administered on paper to all grade 11 students, except those who take the West Virginia Alternate Summative Assessment. The SAT School Day is given during a regular school day in the spring of each year. It is a nationally recognized college- and career-readiness assessment administered by the College Board and is accepted at colleges and universities throughout West Virginia and the nation for both college admissions and placement. It also can be used to qualify for the Promise Scholarship. Students have access to practice SAT tests through Khan Academy, which also provides West Virginia educators and students access to online content and resources to help prepare students for taking the SAT School Day.

West Virginia students in grades 3-8 and grade 11 who have significant intellectual disabilities take the West Virginia Alternate Summative Assessment (WVASA), also known as the Dynamic Learning Maps, Alternate Summative Assessment. This assessment is a summative measure of student academic performance based on the West Virginia Alternate Academic Achievement Standards for English, mathematics, and science.

Students in grades 3-8 and grade 11 are assessed in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics. Students in grades 5, 8 and 11 also are assessed in science.

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act(ESEA) requires states to assess all students’ academic abilities. The Every Student Succeeds Act(ESSA) places a 1% cap on the number of students who may participate in a state summative alternate assessment. Students who meet the eligibility criteria have a significant cognitive disability, receives the majority of their instruction through the West Virginia Alternate Academic Achievement Standards, and requires extensive direct, individualized instruction and substantial supports to achieve measurable gains in the grade and age-appropriate curriculum. Eligibility to participate in the WVASA is an IEP committee decision. West Virginia Inclusion Requirements for English Learner Students All ELs participate in WV-MAP at the grade level in which they are enrolled. English learners with disabilities have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a Section 504 Plan for English learners with disabilities, it is recommended IEP and Section 504 committees include an English learner specialist.

The ELPA 21 Assessment is an effective tool for EL (English Learners) students to ensure that English Learners are tested on their knowledge of content rather than their proficiency in English.

JACKSON COUNTY SCHOOLS REQUIRED ASSESSMENTS

I-READY MATH AND READING are comprehensive assessment and instruction programs that provide educators with resources they need to help all students succeed. It connects diagnostic data and personalized instruction. These programs are used K-8 for reading and math and Grade 10 for reading.

ALEKS is a researched-based adaptive learning program utilized for math at the high school level. It helps educators and parents understand each student’s knowledge and learning progress and provides individual support to achieve mastery.

PSAT is administered to 9th and 10th graders each school year. The PSAT measures what you’re learning in school, determines if you’re on track, and open doors for opportunity to prepare and pay for college.

National Assessment of Educational Progress, is often called the “Nation’s Report Card.” It is the largest continuing and nationally representative assessment of what our nation’s students know and can do in core subjects.
