During its November 2, 2017 Regular Session, the Jackson County Board of Education appointed Dr. J. Ben Mize, III to fill the vacancy on the school board created by the passing of Jack D. Wiseman. Mr. Wiseman served on the Board of Education from July 1, 2000 until his passing on September 29, 2017. West Virginia Code §18-5-2 authorizes the Board of Education to appoint an individual to fill a vacancy on the Board. Dr. Mize’s appointment will continue through June 30, 2018.

Dr. Mize is a graduate of DuPont High School, Marshall University and the Southern College of Optometry. Dr. Mize began his optometry practice in Ravenswood in 1993, and was joined in the practice the next year by his wife, Dr. Christy Mize.

Dr. Mize has demonstrated a continuing interest in the youth of Jackson County through his involvement in youth league baseball, basketball and soccer. He is serving his seventh year as an officer of the Ravenswood High School Soccer Boosters. He regularly attends sporting events, concerts, choral competitions and supports the Jackson County Jr. Fair Market Livestock Sale. Dr. Mize has a heart for children and service. In addition to his support of local youth, Dr. Mize has participated in three international vision mission trips.

The Jackson County Board of Education welcomes Dr. Mize to the Board and looks forward to working with him to serve the children of Jackson County.
