WV Early Learning Standards

As noted on the West Virgina Office of Early Learning webpage, the West Virginia Early Learning Standards (WVELS) provides the curricular framework for preschool education in West Virginia.  It is grounded in scientific research of child development, children’s approaches to learning and effective educational practices. The standards are designed to serve as early learning guideline for all children ages three through five regardless of the setting. Additional information regarding the WVELS can be found online at http://static.k12.wv.us/oel/docs/earlylearning_standardsframework_brochureWEB.pdf

HIGHSCOPE

Jackson County Universal Preschool Program has adopted HIGHSCOPE to support the delivery of the WVELS framework.  It is based on sound research and developmentally appropriate practice.  It strives to develop a broad range of skills in children that includes problem-solving, interpersonal and communication skills that are essential for success in society. Children actively participate in the classroom environment.  Key parts of this curriculum include providing a consistent daily routine, children planning, doing, and reviewing their work.  Additional information regarding this curriculum can be found online at www.highscope.org.
